THE NEW AND THE OLD
D.J. of the MONTH
HOME COOKING
This has been a busy month for those who make up map guides for gay guides and magazines. It hasn't been easy keeping up with the number of gay bar openings and closings in the past year. Now, yet another major disco has closed. The Gold Coast, which will long be remembered as one of the most contraversial gay bars in Cleveland, recently announced that gays would no longer be welcome at the establishment. To add salt to the wound, this west side club posted a very derogatory sign on their door with language so strong and anti-gay that the SCENE MAGAZINE would not accept the wording which was submitted for an advertisement in that publication.
Usually the closing of a bar brings some mournful sighs from expatrons and that might have been true at this time also, but with the way this club, which took many gay dollars in the year it was open, handled it's closing, it is highly doubtful that a single tear will be shed.
On the brighter side the Old Plantation..in Akron has announced the opening of OP Toledo will soon be upon us. The highly successful Akron club has long been a first class operation and is now branching out. With such dynamic management and personnel it will be a real treat for the gay residents of Toledo to have The OP in their city.
It has also been reported that Heaven, now under construction on St. Clair Avenue is due to open later this month.adding more variety to the Cleveland Disco scene. This high-tech disco has a tentative opening scheduled for the 26th of
this month.
While we are on the subject of new Discos, a landmark of the Ohio scene has re-opened with new owners and staff. New Dimensions (orginally The Bayou Landing) at 1012 Sumner Court, that sadly closed earily this year has new lease on life.
Bill and George, owners of Hairlines Salon on Clifton, bought the business, cleaned it spic-n-span from top to bottom, repainted, fixed all the non-working electrical and plumbing fixtures and added a very nice game room. Dimensions, always one of the hottest weekend bars in Ohio, is open on weekends again, with many new changes already in the planning stages. George said that soon what used to be Sumner Trucking will be open during the week also.
Good luck to Bill, George, and Staff, and thanks for giving us back a new version of an old friend.
Also opening this month on the west side is The Pub at 9601 Lorain Ave. Your hosts are Michael (A.K.A. Amber), Ron, and Michael's Uncle, Fred and his wife. There is also a very good-looking Security Guard on duty all six nights of the week. This is a very comfortable cocktail bar, with video games, jukebox, and pool table for your enjoyment. The decor, very warm golds and browns, is highlighted by a beautiful 1930's Art Deco backbar.
Michael said that they are already hard at work building 'The Coal Bin' which will be downstairs.
The Coal Bin will have a bar, and serve a buffet on the original coal shute that is still there.
There will also be a 'private' movie room downstairs, for those who would like a more intiment atmosphere. And it won't be too long before you will be able to enjoy The Pub on Sundays too, the new license will arrive soon.
There are great specials here six nights a week plus very long cocktail hours on both Friday and Saturday.
Check this one out for a good time.
